Germany’s First Andaz Hotel Replicates Diamonds in the Bavarian Flag

Schwabing, in the north of Munich, the capital of the German state of Bavaria, is one of the most high-end neighborhoods of the city. Its well-known German avant-garde districts, Art Nouveau architecture, and a bohemian culture that saw writers, intellectuals and artists gather at open-air cafes in the 19th and 20th centuries, has seemingly endured till the present and now attracts locals and tourists alike.

Hotel Andaz in Schwabing is the district’s newest addition to its eclectic landscape. The many aspects of Bavarian culture are threaded into the design language of the hotel. The diamond-shaped blue and white Bavarian flag, for example, is replicated in a diamond pattern on the natural stone floor, on the ceiling, as well as on the diamond-shaped columns in the entrance area.

M’uniqo, the sky bar, exudes rich opulent tones of brass and petrol, and has a view over Munich to top it off. The five-meter high bar has back-lit shelves with hundreds of bottles reflected in the ceiling.

The rooms are created with an open character to mimic a spacious loft. Raw steel frames, instead of opaque walls, separate the areas of the room into a bathroom, bedroom and living area, and forms a free visual axis to see through the room from the entrance to the windows.

This boutique hotel was spearheaded by concrete, a studio in Amsterdam which has also worked on the W Hotels in London and Mumbai and citizenM hotels worldwide.

The spa and pool deck area breaks from the angular styles of the hotel. The round shapes are softer and more in tune with the natural forms of the human body, concrete explains. To accentuate the sense of calm in the spa area, concrete has chosen natural materials, soft greens, oak, light tile mosaics and elegant brass accents.
