NYC-based Joseph Carini Carpets announced their latest Artist Collaboration and it’s a really good one! They enlisted renowned Italian designer and co-founder of the Memphis group Alessandro Mendini, well known for his work with Alessi and Swatch, to create a limited-edition series and the result is The Earthquake Collection. Using bold graphic forms and gutsy color ways, the designs bring Mendini’s legendary design aesthetic to the often forgotten floor in this latest collection of rugs.
The carpets were woven by select weavers in Nepal who were trained by master weavers with the hope of bringing back and preserving the lost weaving techniques of the area. The designs were in the process of being woven in 2015 when the earthquake hit. While none of the carpets were damaged, the four carpets were named after villages in Nepal affected by the earthquake.
Joseph Carini Carpets will be making 10 sets of each design and can custom make the designs in any size and material preferred.
The rugs will debut during Salone del Mobile in Milan at the Fragile Gallery.
