Michaelis Boyd Highlights Dutch and Modern Design at the Kimpton de Witt Amsterdam

Architecture practice Michaelis Boyd seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to designing luxe interiors for hotels, mixing traditional with modern design (like their previous project, The Williamsburg Hotel). Its newest hospitality project lies across the pond at the Kimpton de Witt Hotel in Amsterdam, the Kimpton Hotels’ first destination outside of the US designed hand in hand with Ave Bradley, the Global Senior VP of Design and Creative Director of Kimpton Hotels. The hotel takes on a playful but architecturally-driven design aesthetic, with contemporary lounges and lobby spaces you’ll want to inhabit outside of your impeccably designed guest rooms.

The hotel boasts 274 rooms, including 15 signature rooms housed in original 17th century architecture, all of which have been designed with one of two interior palettes. The bedrooms feature smooth oak floors, color-blocked walls, accents of luxe velvet paired with brass details, and artwork that gives a nod to traditional Amsterdam.

The guest bathrooms are lined with geometric floor and wall tiles. Matte black hardware, brass fixtures and wall-mounted toilets add a contemporary touch.

This might be a hospitality first but the way Michaelis Boyd designed the common rooms throughout hotel will make you want to relax outside your guestroom, not just in it. You’ll find a plethora of spaces to lounge about right when you enter the hotel. A range of blue and white tiles inspired by traditional Dutch delft tiles greet you at the entrance, surrounded by banquette seating, cotton candy-hued chairs, marble side tables, cushions and blankets for reading and relaxing. A mixture of feature lightings illuminate the spaces, highlighting the modern artworks that hang on the terrazzo walls.

The history of the building is still present in the hotel. The House Bar located in the Queen of Holland building still uses the original beams and timber wall paneling, with an added custom bird motif wallpaper Michael Boyd designed to run between the ceiling beams reminiscent of traditional painted murals from the Dutch Renaissance. The room is painted a dark glossy teal and furnished with plush velvet seating and low level lighting, making for a moody yet cosy atmosphere.
