Mount Pleasant is a minimalist house located in Toronto, Canada, designed by Roundabout Studio. For more than half a century, the site was occupied by a beloved neighborhood flower bulb distributor. Unfortunately, the owners had to vacate in 2001, and a local music enthusiast purchased the lot soon after hoping to revive the site.
The site is adjacent to a busy street, thus the architects provided slim slit windows for the building’s front facade. In an effort to compensate for lost natural light, the home opens up to a foyer that reveals a series of large-scale skylights that help stream abundant sunlight into the building, while still retaining privacy.
In order to accommodate events and guests, the interior has an open plan in the kitchen, dining, and living room spaces. In addition, a double-height area is located at the center of the structure for special performances. Depending on how these spaces are utilized, the home feels equally suited for one person or one hundred.
