Nothing Is Everything in the Void Matters Collection

With a focus on nothing, negative space becomes the main character in the Void Matters furniture collection. Brought to life by Note Design Studio for Sancal, four sculptural products that range from chiseled tables to voluminous poufs bring form to the conceptual experiment.

While Note and Sancal have collaborated for nearly a decade, this is their first time not following a brief and being led by concept instead. The Void Matters collection includes four families: Core, Remnant, Dividuals and Vestige. Each of these chairs, sofas, poufs and tables are a successful exploration of the relationship between positive and negative space that has resulted in a beautiful, functional collection of furniture.

“The idea was to put emphasis on nothing. Specifically, on the negative space surrounding physical objects. By acknowledging this emptiness, it becomes a design element just as important as the objects themselves. While positive shapes often are associated with strong, active, qualities, negative space is calm and peaceful and leaves room for interpretation. Our thesis was that the juxtaposition of these two relative spaces would bring something new and thought-provoking to a room,” says Cristiano Pigazzini, Note Design Studio.
