Pair Mixes It up + Hacks Its Own Product for a Client Request

San Francisco-based Pair is known for its customizable furniture that allows designers to easily and affordably tailor their furniture products without having to wait for long lead times similar to custom built products. However, they don’t do lighting, which was something a recent client requested. For the client’s refurbished factory space that was inherently industrial, Pair was able to create a desking solution with custom light fixtures by hacking their own product, the Mix collection.

Pair’s furniture collection is designed to be customizable, so a simple kit of parts serves as blank canvas for clients to personalize their furniture to the aesthetics of the space and functionality needs. For this project, the client wanted shared lighting but individual desks with spatial delineation. Additionally, the desks needed to be independent and height adjustable.

Pair went through a few design iterations tested different light sources like incandescent and LED lights. The team settled on LED light strips that can be individually powered and are housed within a custom lighting support system.

Vertical posts hold up the light bars and contain the electrical wires, keeping the design streamlined and minimal. The light has a low profile without creating angular shadows on the work surfaces.
