Pangea Maps: Wooden 3D Contour Maps of Iconic Waterscapes

Industrial designer Tom Percy founded Pangea Maps in 2014 in Australia and has been creating 3D contour maps out of wood ever since. The sculptural, layered maps showcase various lakes and coastlines in Australia, the United States, and Canada, and along with the current selection available, they also do custom ones of your favorite waterscapes.

Each map utilizes modern surveying techniques and CAD technology to achieve the intricate details shown of the bodies of water, which are made from layers of plywood. Percy researches underwater topography for each of the locations he works on before laser cutting the plywood to represent the contours of the water’s floor.

After each map is assembled, it gets framed in hardwood and topped with a layer of plexiglass. The finished maps are placed in a wooden box for shipment.

After focusing on his home turf, Percy has expanded the collection to include North America and has just launched a manufacturing and distribution center to make the expanded collection happen. From the time you order your map until you receive it is just two weeks making it an ideal gift.
