Pauline Deltour’s LaCie Mirror Hard Drive Unveiled at CES 2015

French designer Pauline Deltour’s portfolio of work for the likes of Muji, Alessi, Boffi, and Discipline showcase an easy comfort working across a wide variety of materials, even sugar. In 2013 she revealed the Black Clock, a painted steel frame timepiece with a two way mirror front face and two LEDs illuminating the hour and minutes. In the same vein, Deltour’s latest effort unveiled at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week in collaboration with computer accessory maker LaCie takes a reflective perspective with external storage.

Deltour's earlier work, Black Clock, was shown at shown at Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano at the Nouvelle Vague vol.2 exhibition curated by Cédric Morrisset in 2013, a precursor in style/theme to the Mirror hard drive.

The former Konstantin Grcic protégé encased a 1 terabyte hard drive within scratch-resistant and chemically strengthened Corning Gorilla Glass, giving the LaCie Mirror a display-worthy presence similar to last year’s similarly silver-plated, spherical, Christolfle. An accompanying ebony wood display stand props up the mirror-finish USB 3.0 hard drive, affording users additional capacious digital file storage and an effective way to prevent sneak attacks thanks to the view afforded using its reflective surface. Subtly playful, the Mirror’s design will probably outlive its technical specs, a marker of things to come where digital peripherals lining our desktops will appear more “design” than “digital”.

“Covered by mirrored glass, it’s first an elegant and functional object, and only on second glance is it revealed to be a slim and high–performance hard drive.” – Pauline Deltour, Industrial Designer
