Polaroid Grey Label

On Thursday at CES, Polaroid and Lady Gaga revealed their collaboration, the Grey Label. Composed of three products, the live reveal was streamed to the web and I watched as Polaroid came back from the dead with a few impressive products that set a new standard for photography and printing.

Here’s the low down on the goodies:

The GL10 Instant Mobile Printer is an instant, portable printer that works with your smartphone via bluetooth, except iPhone. What a bummer, and Lady Gaga was quick to follow up the announcement with basically a “it’s not us, it’s them” (“them” being Apple). The printer uses embedded dye-crystal ZINK® Zero Ink® Technology from ZINK Imaging. Patented ZINK PaperTM is an advanced composite material with cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded inside. Before printing, the embedded dye crystals are clear, so ZINK Paper®, looks like regular white photo paper. The GL10 Instant Mobile Printer uses heat to activate and colorize these crystals. So no ribbons, toners or inkjet cartridges. The printer will be available in May for $149.99 (MSRP), along with the ZINK 3×4″ Paper, price TBD.

Building on their long history of instant photography, the GL30 Instant Digital Camera is a new Polaroid experience using next generation ZINK Zero Ink Technology from ZINK Imaging. It’s a digital and physical camera. The GL30 Instant Digital Camera will be available later this year, price TBD.

And finally the GL20 Camera Glasses, which look like something only Lady Gaga could pull of wearing, are a new breed of sunglasses. Fashion meets photography with these shades — users can instantly take photos using the glasses’ built-in camera and then display the images on the glasses’ LCD screen. They will also be available later this year, price TBD.

I think that these sunglasses are awesome because this technology takes us into a new realm of sharing, interacting and experiencing the world around us that can only get more exciting in years to come.
