Portal: A Hybrid Fixture by Lake + Wells and Karice That Balances Between Two Surfaces

Lake + Wells is a Chicago-based husband-and-wife studio founded by Mark Kinsley and Leigh Staten that recently, in collaboration with Karice, was selected as one of the finalists for the 2019 L A M P lighting competition for their newest product, Portal. Neither a sconce nor a floor lamp, yet also curiously both, Portal balances between the wall and floor with its elongated form and reflective, polished brass core.

The hybrid fixture is named for its nod to the literary idea of a mirror as a portal to other worlds. Each Portal is made from a single block of solid aluminum that’s been refined, anodized, and then assembled with a hand-polished brass mirror. The result is brilliant object that’s functional, beautiful, and magical.
