Rustic Stools 2.1-2.5 by Mark Laban

Part of a continuous series, the Rustic Stools have evolved through various iterations as designer Mark Laban explores the design process where he works hands-on with the machine itself – a 3-axis CNC router. The latest round, versions 2.1-2.5, are constructed out of yellow Valchromat, a high density fiber material made with organically dyed wooden fibers that are bonded in resin.

During the production process, Laban toys with the software as a way to get unexpected textures and surface patterns, instead of the smooth results that CNC technology is known for. The rough surfaces reference the nature of the material in its raw form while giving the finished product a visually enticing texture.

Laban won the London Design Fair’s associate prize at July’s New Designers show, which means he receives a stand at this year’s London Design Fair in September.
