Science Hills Komatsu by Mari Ito/UAo

Science Hills Komatsu is a minimalist space located in Ishikawa, Japan, designed by Mari Ito/UAo. Komatsu has always been a city developed on an industrial foundation focused on manufacturing. The complex encompasses a science museum, as well as a communication center that is constructed on the former factory site of a leading construction and mining company.

Due to the city’s heritage of manufacturing, the complex is an homage to the inheritance and spirit of this industrial mecca, and serves as a tool to enlighten and interest the younger generation of their accomplishments. The complex itself is only four stories tall with wave-like masses blending into the surrounding environment of relatively low-rise buildings.

The science museum is located under the structure’s waves, and contains a 3D dome theater, a science experience learning center, a local industrial promotion center, and an incubation center. The rooftop surface contains a garden to serve not only as a public park, but to enhance insulation efficiency as well.
