Sculptural Ornamental Lighting from Giopato & Coombes

During Salone del Mobile 2017, design studio Giopato & Coombes presented two new bodies of work, inspired by the essay, “Ornament and Crime” by architect Adolf Loos. Through these collections, the designers ask whether or not ornament is really a crime when it is paired with cutting edge technology and function. Their answer lies in Cirque and Lace.

Cirque is a delicate lamp with thread-like structures formed of brushed brass. With any breeze, it changes forms to create endless geometric compositions. While it looks thin, it is made using a refined technique that keeps it strong and able to conduct light efficiently.

Lace is a hanging, luxurious glass chain that is connected with matte gold-plated metal rings. It’s these metal rings that also act as a light source, with LED strips that cover the rings. It is a free structure, highlighting the skilled craftsmanship behind the design.
