I chatted with Dana a little bit about her inspiration and process:
What’s your preferred medium?
For the past few years I’ve been doing mixed media painting with oil, waterproof inks, spray paint, acrylics, and drawing media like markers and pencil. I’m starting to phase out the drawing media and am focusing predominantly on oil and spray paint.
How do you approach/start a painting?
By imagining forms on a blank surface, then cutting loose with gestural underpainting.
What inspired “Contact 01”?
Power terminals and lines stretching through great swaths of tree lined grass.
Do you listen to music while painting? If so, what’s on your playlist?
Yes, sometimes. Currently Ryan Adams and The Cardinals. His music feels like the Midwest in Summer.
Who is your favorite living contemporary artist?
That’s tough. There are so many I really enjoy. One that sticks out to me right now is Cynthia Ona Innis. She makes such great breathable work that never looks underdone.
