8building by Takao Shiotsuka Atelier

This three-story building, simply called 8building, is located in Oita-city, Japan. Designed by Takao Shiotsuka Atelier, 8building contains 12 rooms that consists of residences, offices, and galleries. Due to the unique combination of rooms within the space, the architects decided it was best to use the most basic of materials in order to effectively cater to all interior types.

Since this was a renovation project, everything except the frame of the building was removed. Walls were cut down to increase ventilation and lighting. The conversion focused on an architecture that would maximize multiple and various usage of the housing floor plan.

I’ll be the first to admit my love for the industrial and minimalist look. This building has both, and the end result of the space is phenomenal. The sleek surfaces of the furniture, kitchen, and bath are perfectly contrasted with the hardened appearance of aged concrete. There is nothing superficial about this building – what you see is definitely what you get.
