Carolin Pertsch is the designer behind the Zostera Stool taking inspiration from her childhood memories of eelgrass. Every year, tons of waste washes up on German beaches leaving behind an ugly mass of “brown carpet”, i.e., eelgrass (Zostera Marina). When tourists come, they’re expecting pristine oceanfronts but that’s not what they’re getting. In order to keep tourism up, the natural material gets shipped off to landfills. Peitsch decided to challenge herself to see if there was a way to use the eelgrass as a material, and the result is the Zostera Stool.
After a long experimentation process, a new eco-material was created. The eelgrass fiber-reinforced eco-plastic is made from a bio-resin that’s mostly produced from vegetable oil. The lightweight material is durable and the finished product has a nice organic quality, perfect for the stool seats.
Different colors can be achieved simply by sorting the eelgrass by shade.
