Every other week we’re inviting one of the Design Milk team to share five personal favorites – an opportunity for each of us to reveal the sort of designs we use and appreciate in our own lives from a more personal perspective. Founder + Chief Creative Officer Jaime Derringer returns this week for our Take 5 series…

Take 5: Emo Sundaes, Paper Pulp Sculptures, Interactive Ecosystems + More

1. We’ve long been fans of LA-based artist Joshua Abarbanel, who I recently started following on “The Gram”. There’s something mesmerizing about his intricate, layered laser-cut wood sculptures that captivate. See more of his nature-inspired work here. One of his latest pieces, Hull 04 (above) introduces a new material: pulped paper. He says:

Hull 04, detail

“The onset of the pandemic crystalized something that I had been wrestling with for a while: feeling inundated by, and guilty about, the copious amounts of paper and packaging materials that suffuse our daily lives. This issue became ever more apparent as quarantine restrictions created a situation where online usurped in-store shopping. Hull 04 starts to address my concerns about privacy, consumerism, consumption and sustainability. The base of this piece is made from the contents of old tax files that I shredded and mulched into paper clay. All of the flourishes on top are made of cut cardboard packing material and product packaging from my household. Hulls—as forms and ideas—reference survival, escape and regeneration.”

2. The Ultimate Design Milk Stationery Set by Design Milk! I am still a to-do-list writer, using pen and notebooks – yeah, I know – old school. So when we decided to design some of our own products, I thought about what I use on a daily basis… As part of our 15th anniversary celebration, we customized these popular Poketo products with some of our own patterns and designs. Go grab the bundle, or go a la carte with 2 different blank notebook designs, a Concept Planner, a Slim Pen Set or a DM Bookmark, or choose from one of the other bundles.

3. teamLab has a new exhibition in San Francisco at the Asian Art Museum called Continuity in which you become part of an interactive and artistic natural ecosystem of flowers, fish and birds. Get tickets here.

4. Taking Back Sundae, a new creative project by Lauren Hom and Kristle Marshall that pairs ice cream with pop punk and emo albums – an unlikely combo. But it churned out some tasty-looking treats – I’m all for anything that brings food and music together!

p.s. listen to the Clever episode with Lauren Hom here.

5. Giant Jumbling Tower – My daughter and I play this game ALL THE TIME and I’m not embarrassed that she constantly beats me! It’s one of our favorites.
