Industrial designer Yves Béhar is making his curatorial debut in San Francisco this July in a major design exhibition called TechnoCRAFT.

TechnoCRAFT, which will be on exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, will chart current movements blurring the traditional boundary between designer and consumer and look at the different ways that consumers are personalizing design in efforts to assert creativity and individuality in an age of mass-production and mass-consumerism. It will also explore how an emotional connection to objects has been resurrected in individuals and how the two realms of design and mass production have combined to once again allow for “Design in the Age of Individuality.”

Yves spent 18 months researching the new “makers and craftsmen,” from the everyday person to the tech entrepreneur to the young curious designer all of whom share a new sense of “making” and openness to collaborate while operating in a more individualized marketplace.

Other designers’ recent explorations of this trend of “consumer becomes designer.” For example, Tom Dixon experimented with the notion of designers turned producers, consumers turned designers at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair and ICFF with his “Flash Factory” where members of his studio assembled the Etch light — a geometric, digitally produced light — on the spot. Also, Finnish company Freedom of Creation’s mission over the past 10 years has been to make only what a consumer needs, thus by-passing mass production and introducing mass-customization. Sounds like a great exhibition!
