The AQUA FOSSIL Collection Turns a Solid Into Liquid

A standout discovery from this year’s Design Miami/ was part of Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design’s 10th year participating – Amarist Studio’s AQUA FOSSIL collection. Amarist Studio is Clara Campo and Arán Lozano, who met in their hometown located in the Pyrenees mountains, surrounded by nature and craftsmanship. As they grew up, the two began sharing concepts and ideas that eventually led to forming their own creative practice. The duo enjoys blurring the boundaries between contemporary art, design, and craft, creating evocative and functional works, which they’ve done here through lighting and mirrors.

The AQUA FOSSIL collection takes the viewer on a journey to a landscape of unknown nature to reveal the molecular composition of its main material: Alabaster Stone. The evaporation of a sea millions of years ago led to the formation of this white stone with translucent properties. Its molecular composition is composed of only two molecules – H20 and CaSO4 – which could be described as fossilized water. Now, the area is a desert in the Ribera del Ebro area, where deposits of this mineral are extracted almost like buried treasure. Amarist Studio reinterprets it as a moldable element.

Consisting of five pieces, the series includes AQUA FOSSIL Light I, AQUA FOSSIL Light II, AQUA FOSSIL Mirro I, AQUA FOSSIL Table Lamp, and AQUA FOSSIL Wall Lights I. AQUA FOSSIL Light I is the first to be created with this new technique, where the stone takes on the visual elements of liquid.
