The Empyrean Light Is Inspired by a Black Hole’s Effect on Light

Outer space continues to be a source of mystery and inspiration for all of us gazing up into the sky. For designer Laurids Gallée (whom we’ve featured before), it moved him to create his latest design, a ceiling light called Empyrean suspended 01. The futuristic fixture is inspired by Gallée’s observations of the behavior of light around black holes and how it warps and distorts itself when in close proximity.

Empyrean suspended 01, the first of Gallée’s Empyrean collection, is made with 24 meters of LED light strips that illuminate the blocks of dark resin and highlight the geometric shape of the pendant lamp. The resin blocks play a profound role in the design, as the rounded edges contort the light rays while the thickness of the resin showcases the translucency of the light. The collection will continue to grow as the designer further experiments with the captivating and light-bending qualities of translucent resin.
