The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

I haven’t written anything about our house in quite some time. All this time I wanted to share our news, but things were so up in the air that we didn’t know what was going to happen. Well, it’s all final now—we moved back to San Diego!

The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

I know, I know. How could I leave that awesome house behind? It was supposed to be my dream house. In fact, I think at some point I called it my coffin—I wanted it to be the last house I ever bought. We were certain that it was a done deal. But, things change, especially as our family grew and our needs/wants change. We loved that house—and I mean I loved that house so much I considered driving it across the country. But opportunities presented themselves, and we decided it was best for us, for my husband’s career and for our daughter’s future to make the long (and hopefully final this time) move back to SoCal. We have tons of friends here with little ones the same age as our daughter and we love to be outside. If you didn’t already know, San Diego has one of the best year-round climates in the entire US. It’s not a huge design draw, and although design permeates almost every aspect of my life, I like separating my work and home lives enough where they’re not constantly intersecting; it gives me more time to focus on my family and my hobbies, like running and art. We are looking forward to the increased quality of life we’ll get out of living in this area of the country.

Right now we’re laying low in a temporary apartment, watching the bizarre housing market. One day people are freaking out and rates go haywire, the next day, things are stable. We hope to jump on something fairly soon before mortgage rates go too much higher, but it certainly won’t be as cool or as unique as our house in New Jersey was. In fact, I’m not a huge fan of much of the newer architecture here in SD, and we certainly can’t touch anything that’s architecturally unique unless we win the lottery, so I have to look past that and really focus on the interior and landscaping. I am trying to look at it like a challenge: how to make a cookie-cutter house into a modern home. More soon…

p.s. I really miss my kitchen.
