This Seating Series Is Inspired by a Nostalgic Origami Game
MUT Design Studio’s latest design is stirring up a lot of nostalgia for us. Designed for Ames Living, the Coco seating collection is inspired by “comecocos,” an origami-folded game that typically tells your fortune as the end result. Similarly, Coco is geometric in design yet playful and never harsh. With smooth edges and bright colors, the collection invites guests to lounge comfortably outdoors. Coco pieces are made with foam covers that are handwoven by master artisans in Colombia who have passed down their knowledge and techniques for generations. The armchair modules, footstools, and tables allow for flexible and modular arrangements to fit any outdoor living space.
A special feature of the Coco series lies in the upholstery. After two years of development, MUT created a new way of weaving where just one modification in the weft creates a variation in the color and depth of the textile that makes it look like it’s shimmering, depending on the angle and the point of view of the user. In the end, the studio created eight new colorways. Because this is Ames’ first upholstered seating collection, Coco opens up new possibilities in upholstery and products for the lifestyle brand.
