Thomas Wold: Exploring Wonder [VIDEO]

We collaborated with MSN to profile four artists and designers we love who we think embody the same design, content and functional philosophies as the new MSN.com: design with fierce reductionism, sharing real-time trends, and being perfect for touch. We think you’ll love learning more about these four creatives. Experience their work here, and check out the all-new MSN here.

I discovered the work of Thomas Wold back in 2007. Since then, I’ve been following his work closely and he always seems to surprise me. From his amazing kitchen cabinetry to his playful storage to office spaces, I can’t find fault with anything he does. And to top it all off, he’s so nice!

Since 2007, I’ve always wanted to find out more about his inspiration so we went to San Francisco to visit his studio and talk to him. His work is mostly storage based, therefore, his pieces often feature a variety of doors. The desire to find out what’s behind a doorway—that childlike curiosity that is inside all of us—is what he seeks to recreate in his work, much like the way MSN has focused on our innate desire to touch and interact in their latest redesign.

Thomas explains, “Even though my work deals with a lot of elements, a lot of motifs and shapes and colors, in the end, they’re all refined down to express one idea.” He makes all of these elements come together in one connected piece in a way that I have seen fail with other designers. His ability to take a variety of different parts and build them into cohesive whole is a true talent. I hope you enjoy watching!
