Trace-Collection is a minimalist design created by Tokyo-based Nendo for Collective Design. The fair, which has entered its fourth year in New York City, marks the honor of being selected for the Collective Influence exhibition for which one designer or studio is chosen every year.
The collection focuses on everyday objects that “move,” whether they be furniture, windows, or even doors; these are all items that move in relation to peoples’ daily activities. Although they may not be visible, we are subconsciously aware of the “traces” of their movements every day. For example, a door, when opened or closed, forms a semi-circle when traced into drawing.
Nendo quite literally illustrates these traces by using wireframe metal, allowing users to visualize the movement of each piece without actually having to touch the item. In addition, a number of pieces within the collection have unexpected hinges, creating a variety of movements that would be completely unexpected to the user without the aid of the traces.
