WantedDesign 2014 Student Workshop

Back in January we told you about the exciting WantedDesign Student Workshop that we’re involved in entitled The Future of Paper. Lead by Art Center College of Design professors Dan Gottlieb and Penny Herscovitch of Los Angeles-based design studio Padlab, the workjshop was a 3 1/2 day program during WantedDesign 2014. This year’s workshop, hosted by rOtring creative tools with support from HP and Molo, was a blast to watch unfold. There was no shortage of paper carnage!

The workshop began with students presenting papers from their various countries and then being broken out into teams. Aside from Art Center, participating schools included Tama Art University (Tokyo), Centro University (Mexico), ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres (Paris), ENSCI les ateliers (Paris).

Awesome, fantastic and brilliant paper concepts!

Paper, paper everywhere!

Paper, paper everywhere!

In the end, there were five teams who presented five very different concepts:

Team Yummy presented edible paper with different textures and tastes, and possible shapes inspired by how the taste makes you feel.

Team Home Factory shared a unique upcycling/recycling concept of a home paper mâché-type device for kids that shows them how paper can be recycled. The device creates extrusions which can be assembled into flexible toys and even recycled again after use.

Team Nomad showed an interesting paper divider for personal space and privacy when working in different public or open concept environments. It can be lit and customized, including mood color themes.

Team Bag in a Bag created a paper pulp that could be used to line the bottom of bags that are also made of paper to protect bag bottoms from wearing away.

Team Illuminate, Reveal, Conceal showed customizable paper lamps that you rip and tear to make your own patterns. So fun!

The jury included myself, Robert Nightingale – RBRTNGHTNGL Studio + rOtring Design Lead, Stephanie Forsythe – Molo Lead Designer and Director, Caroline Baumann – Director at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the one and only Giulio Cappellini.

In the end, everyone was a winner! We awarded each team with a critique and lots of encouragement. All in all, it was a fantastic event and I was very honored to be a part of it. I wish all of the students involved the best of luck!
