Watch: Inside the MTA’s New Live Subway Map With Felipe Memoria [VIDEO]

We are pleased to share our first rebroadcast of 2021 from our Design Conversations Lecture Series partnership with The Vignelli Center for Design Studies. Felipe Memoria is a designer and founding partner at Work & Co, a global product design and development agency with 400 people across offices in the U.S., South America and Europe. His talk focuses on the incredible work he and his company did on New York’s Live Subway Map.

Massimo Vignelli’s 1970s work for the New York City subway is among the most iconic in graphic design history. Fifty years later we have seen its evolution with the recent launch of the MTA’s first ever Live Subway Map. It’s the network’s first major redesign in four decades. The web-based map evolves the iconic New York City subway maps by Unimark International and Michael Hertz Associates, using Vignelli’s design and geographical and organic curves by Hertz. The map moves and changes, therefore is a more accurate and timely representation of your trip. It was not only an impressive undertaking, but also a labor of love.

In this talk, Felipe Memoria takes viewers inside the challenges and joys of evolving the legendary work by Massimo for the present day.

To learn more about The Vignelli Center for Design Studies at RIT, they have launched digital access to the archives through Google Arts & Culture, joining over 2000 cultural institutions from around the world. The initial launch includes nearly 900 high resolution images of artifacts from the archives so that now anyone with access to the Internet and Google Arts & Culture can search the Vignelli archives or browse it by color or chronological order. Very exciting!
