Yves Béhar’s Touchscreen Sodastream MIX Is a Mixologist’s Dream Machine

According to industry data soda volume sales have dropped for the 10th year straight. Blame it on the public’s realization chugging back cans of bubbly sugar water (or artificially sweetened diet drinks) too often isn’t the greatest of habits. But that doesn’t mean fizz has gone out of fashion; the flip-side is Americans are increasingly making their own sodas at home, and more likely than not it’s being done with consumer-friendly CO2-infusing machines like those made by Sodastream.

The newest update from Israeli maker Sodastream may arguably be the largest technological leap in soda making technology ever, upping the ante in a market where machines primarily do the same thing: inject carbon dioxide into water, but only water. For not only is the new Sodastream MIX equipped with a touchscreen color display, the unit is now Bluetooth, iOS/Android app, and cloud connected, all for the purpose of doing something which may perk the ears of mixologists and the home entertaining set everywhere. The Sodastream MIX can carbonate almost any beverage.

Fruit juice, alcohol, punch, coconut water, chocolate milk…all will be fair game when it comes to carbonation thanks to a system infusing precise bursts of CO2 with “the right amount of intensity and length of carbonation” which was formerly unavailable.

The yet to be priced MIX was designed again by Yves Béhar’s Fuseproject. Behar and team took much of what was successful of their original minimalist and monolithic Sodastream Source design and infused it with technological features which transform this latest version from tool into a full blown app-enabled kitchen appliance, but this time in a sleek and handsome color combination of black and lipstick red.

Inside, the MIX’s library of drinks is planned to be continually updated and bolstered by user concoctions as picked by Sodastream to add to their iOS and Android companion apps for download onto the MIX, seeding a community of experimentation and sharing which may make sharing a drink from afar a reality when released sometime in 2016.
