Two Apartments That Meet In the Middle

This 65 square meter apartment in Barcelona (699 square feet) was renovated by Miel Arquitectos and Studio P10 as a flexible home for co-existence. Two independent units are on either side of the elongated space with a central communal area in the middle.

In each of the separate units, they tackled the four basic requirements – sleep, work, relaxation, and hygiene. The common space houses the kitchen and dining room, along with the social functions. The goal with the design was to balance privacy giving each resident the ability to close themselves off in their space without blocking the natural light for the rest of the apartment.

An industrial parquet floor was used which has clean lines, juxtaposed with the rugged exposed brickwork.

Within each of the private spaces, there’s a multipurpose loft above the beds for storage or hanging out. The open space also allows for more light to reach the shower with the glass panel at one end.

Each of the private spaces also has its own bathroom so they don’t have to share.

The loft level adds some slightly usable square footage, or at least some additional storage space.

They were able to reuse and replace some of the original hydraulic mosaic tiles adding an eco-friendly element to the space. The kitchen was also adapted and reused in the apartment.
