Apples+Apples?

My lease on my current car is up in December and I have been pondering one of the following:

civic

prius

Now, I thought maybe I could get some information comparing both of these super cool cars before I test drive them to see which would be the better choice. So, I found this link on Treehugger, which really doesn’t help at all. I really think the best thing for me to do is to check out the 2007s and test drive them both. This is a really interesting article on the costs of hybrids versus gas prices – but for me, getting a hybrid isn’t necessarily about saving money on gas. Despite my husband’s complaints that they are too expensive to fix/maintain, I still think I will feel good and I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about getting a car.

  1. Get a new Ford! You will get the MyTouch system!! :) You can be sync’d for life!

  2. You do realise in actual fact those are two of the worst offending cars on the road due to their manufacture process and in actual fact a hummer is more environmentally friendly, If you want a truly green car buy a smart

  3. Update: since this post was back in 2006, I ended up with a used Mazda and I love it. My next car won’t be any time soon *knocks on wood*

  4. Mazdas are great cars. Did you get a Mazda 3? Great cars.

Mazzaj is correct. The manufacturing process and disposal of 200lbs of batteries is extremely harmful. The process to strip mine the materials in Canada, refine in China, manufacture in Japan and come back to North America is extremely earth unfriendly. Plus a hybrid also has a conventional 4 cyl engine. So the same process as any other car is additional to the electric engine. Then to properly recycle these materials is also very toxic. Most of the materials cannot be reclaimed.

In my opinion, a car should only have an efficient gas engine, an electric only engine, a diesel engine, but not a combination of two of these.
