The Carpet by Laurens van Wieringen was constructed from many little “foam-bars” in different colors and heights. Together these foam bars show an image of a landscape in color and a relief in height, kind of like a topographic map. Laurens worked with the help of 29 friends to put together the carpet.

Wow, it’s like LEGO but in carpet form. Must have been a fantastic project to put together and quite amazing to see it all come together. Reminds me of the children’s TV show Art Attack and their Big Art Attack projects.

This is brilliant! I bet it took a lot of time to put together, but the final outcome is very cool. I would love to have one myself.

That is really cool. It would be cool to have entire blankets like that dedicated to small regions of the world.

Please, PLEASE let me know how you did this. I am currently completing my degree in fine art, my final thesis soon to come to fruition; and have been wanting to do something very similar to this for a very long time, but all the carpet making courses I have enrolled in have never covered anything like it…
I don’t mean an in depth explanation, just a very very basic explanation of how it was constructed, and what type of foam you used for the rug itself.
I would be forever in your debt, credit you appropriately, and of course send you some photos of my final work etc etc.
