A Day in the Life of Heather Keiko

We are huge fans of Australian textile designer Heather Keiko Noonan‘s line of hand-crafted felt jewelry, Heather Keiko. This Sydney, Australia-based designer, who distributes her pieces Stateside through Areaware, forged her business in London in 2007, but moved back to Australia in 2009, where she now lives and works. Keiko sent us a glimpse of a day in the life of a busy jewelry-designing mom for this month’s Designer Dailies.

6.30-7:00 AM: My day starts at about when my son Akira (Aki) awakes full of beans! Before breakfast he is out on the balcony inspecting his veggie patch to see if any new cherry tomatoes have ripened over night.

7:00-9:00 AM: I make myself a pot of green tea and make myself and Aki some breakfast. I quickly check emails and respond to any urgent ones. Then I get both of us ready to head out the door.

9:00-10.30 AM: It’s off to the park for a run around, a coffee, and a catch up with the other mums and bubs in the area.

11:00 AM – 2:00 PM: With a nice big chunk of Aki-free time, I like to sit down and get some sketching done, as well as do some research into our next designs.

2:00-4:00 PM: Currently we are in the design development stage for our new Autumn/Winter Range 2012 (southern hemisphere). We are looking to expand the Heather Keiko collection to include some lovely homewares. So lots of sewing and prototyping to accomplish!

4:00-5:00 PM: A Skype meeting about the development of our new homewares with overseas manufacturers. We are trying to source organizations which advocate for and use fair trade workers.

5:00-6:00 PM: Clean up time! Sometimes it seems I make more of a mess than Aki.

6:00-7:00 PM: Family dinner at Balmoral Beach: grilled fish and chips. After a quick stroll along the beach we head home for a bath, story, and bed for Aki.

7:00 -10:00 PM:  My husband Andrew and I grab a drink and talk about our day—without any interruptions! Then its off to bed for some much deserved rest!

Thanks, Heather!
