Based in Jakarta, Studiohiji designer Abie Abdillah created an armchair for Cappellini that perfectly straddles old and new. Lukis blends traditional techniques with a contemporary design aiming to help reignite the rattan industry in Indonesia. With heightened interest in sustainable resources, rattan makes a lot of sense as a go-to material for furniture. It grows really fast, replenishing itself for future use, and every part of it can be used so there’s no waste.
The woven seat, sides, and back utilize the traditional rattan steam-bending process, while the structure of the chair is constructed out of rubber wood, a tropical hardwood. The open, linear weave of the rattan gives the chair a classically modern feel making it a great option for dining chairs or extra seating in most spaces.
