Modern Times

Gothenburg, Sweden-based design studio Modern Times creates furniture, interior architecture and other concepts. They exhibited their new collection at Salone Satellite in April.

Descriptions below are from the designers.

Black box
The black box cabinet is dedicated to the most significant items in life — like the black box of an air craft, it is a memorandum of a persons life. Since such objects vary much in size and format, the cabinet offers a variety of storage potential. Black box is covered with furniture linoleum, a material chosen for its scent of linseed oil and matte tactile surface. This natural material will mature and wear beautifully as the cabinet records the life of its owner.

Malmön
The table defines a place of great personal significance. The rough granite table top and the slender birch construction describe the West coast of Sweden with its archipelago of harsh cliffs and groves of birches. This particular region has always affected and influenced us as persons.

Trestle Atool
This is a small stool with a big personality. Its construction is based on the classical trestle found in barns and outhouses across Sweden. The trestle is a multi-purpose design that can function as many kinds of furniture. The surface is covered with furniture linoleum, a material chosen for its scent of linseed oil and matte tactile surface. This natural material will mature and wear beautifully as the Trestle stool follows its owner through a lifetime.

A Piece of Forest
A Piece of Forest is one single pod. The pod has the ability to assemble into groups and grow, the hexagonal geometry allows it to repeat itself and cover a larger surface. In each pod hides one LED-module that gently shines on neighboring pods and a glowing landscape spreads out. The light is colored by the different colored pods and affords character to the significant space. A Piece of Forest can be assembled into an asymmetrical or pendant luminaire and Modern Times shows a variety of models.

Like the name hints, the pod has its origin in the forest. The innovation DuraPulp by Södra is a composite consisting of PLA (polylactic acid, a biologically degradable polymer produced from starch) and a selected wood pulp. When heated to approximately 170 C the PLA melts and encapsulates the pulp fiber. DuraPulp is a new material with unique properties, somewhere between paper and plastics.

Decor
There are some skills and techniques that fall into oblivion due to the strive to modernize and rationalize. When it comes to furniture design, faux painting is such a skill. This technique we often meet but seldom recognize for its beauty. Decor celebrates the subtle art of imitating marble and makes the skill significant and attractive again.
