Reader Needs Help
I don’t normally post these types of things, but because I can’t answer her question, I have no other choice but to ask the readers for assistance.
One of our readers is looking for a modern, attractive doormat-type rug that says “Please Take your Shoes Off”, or “Shoes Here Please”, or something of the sort.
Does anyone remember seeing anything like this?

Here one is… though I’m not sure what their style is, so this might not be a good fit.

Or this one is customizable:

I recommend a D.I.Y. mat a la Martha Stewart:

… or why not hang a cute sign on the door that says something like “Welcome, please remove your shoes.”
Anyhow… hope this helps a bit.

Personally, I think it’s kind of lame to ask guests to remove their shoes. Are your guests too dumb or thoughtless to clean their shoes when entering your house?
A sign seems even more lame–so if you must have people remove their shoes, why not create a little shoe altar that makes it welcoming and pleasant to remove one’s shoes, while simultaneously telegraphing your wish?
Everyone should know to remove their shoes when going in someone’s house. I can’t believe some people keep their shoes on. Even if you “clean” your shoes, they’re still dirty and carry who knows what germs from outside. There, my two cents.
we’re working on going back to a shoe-free household, but my mom, who has one, just has a little laminated sign tacked to the front door that says something along the lines of “please remove your shoes upon entering” it works well. I like the idea of a doormat though!
When I visited Maui, there was a shop that sold all sorts or stereotypical “tourist” stuff. It was a chain store, called something like “Honalulu Hattie’s” or something like that. The silliness factor aside, they sold small, sweetly worded signs that I saw mounted by the front doors of many private homes, requesting visitors to remove their shoes. It was the wording itself that I especially liked. Perhaps if someone in Maui reads this, they’ll know the store to which I’m referring and they’ll post the correct information here…one can hope, right???
though not a doormat, i remember seeing a little feature in blueprint magazine (one of the first ones out, not a recent one) that had a nicely designed ‘clip-art’ sign that you could print out and put in a frame. they had a couple of great ideas of where to place the sign. i’ll dig through my old issues and see if i can find it!
We have a great door mat as our friends struggle to take their shoes off before coming into the house.
“You have two choices, take your shoes off, or scrub the floors”
Works every time!
It was purchased from Bed, Bath & Beyond in Auckland New Zealand
I agree with you.I have a few options:
“Please be prepared to remove your shoes.” which is a little passive-agressive to me
“Leave your soles here” which is kinda cute
“This is not a resturaunt…Bare feet and mismatched socks welcomed here.”
“Trust me…We don’t CARE about your feet”
My friend printed one out and put it on cardstock. It said “Welcome. this is a shoeless environment.”
Has anyone been able to find the “You have two choices, take your shoes off, or scrub the floors” in the US or online?
I think removing shoes is an excellent thing to do and one should never be afraid to ask guests to take their shoes off.
I dedicated an whole blog to this subject.
