Residence in China by H23

H23 has designed this residence in China that features simple lines and very understated hues. If you’re looking for some minimalistic inspiration on this Tuesday, then here it is. The staircase is my personal favorite.

Han Shao , Director of H23 says:

It is not unusual that homeowners in China have to finish up project by themselves from a building skeleton they bought from developer after they move in. In order to control costs and gain hands-on experience, I decided to do much of the work myself and hired local contractors as needed. Working with local carpenters was a great experience for learning their building techniques first-hand.

I usually prefer to have bursts of color in my environment so was quite surprised at how drawn I was to Han Shao’s minimalist palette. But the thoroughly neutral tones work so exquisitely with the simplicity of line and form that I immediately fell under its spell. As I lingered over each photo, I experienced a calm that would be wonderful to associate with the phrase “my home”.
Everything about this design left me mesmerized and certainly the staircase was a testament to the marriage of design and craftsmanship. But having raised four sons to adulthood, I must say that the railing is not child-friendly (the breaks at each landing seem especially unsafe for small bodies) and was the singular aspect of Han Shao’s enthralling design which gave me pause. All in all, this was a delight to see and I’m grateful this inspiring home was shared with us!
