Tim Thaler wanted to maximize the floor space in his kitchen, but also needed a solution for an island. How could he have both? By hiding the island in the floor. Tim’s island comes up and down with the touch of a button on his iPhone — there’s an app for that. Check out the video below.

Wow! Amazing! Why haven’t I thought of this before! This ought to be in every home! It’s like something out of a spy movie, an evil-secret-lair thing, perfect!

In a kitchen that big is such a space saving gadget like this really necessary or just a fun gadget for those with money to waste? lol either way it’s pretty damn cool! :-)

It’s amazing and cool!
Now, I know there is a kitchen decor is very sophisticated. How much it cost to make the kitchen decor?

This is a terrible idea!!
Who in their right mind would want to eat and prepare food on the same floor that you walk on everyday? And what’s up with those rugs? Is that what’s supposed to keep the whole thing sanitary? Plus, the amount of electricity used to power that thing! I’m supposed to wait for that thing to float up every time i want to grub or drink a coffee?
This was done by someone very indulgent, vain and unintelligent.

To pick apart this statement:
This is a terrible idea!! — Closed minded opinion
Who in their right mind would want to eat and prepare food on the same floor that you walk on everyday? — People who use plates
And what’s up with those rugs? — Decoraton
Is that what’s supposed to keep the whole thing sanitary? Plus, the amount of electricity used to power that thing! — Ran for a few seconds, you use more electricity when running a washing machine.
I’m supposed to wait for that thing to float up every time i want to grub or drink a coffee? — There is more then one surface in the kitchen.
This was done by someone very indulgent, vain and unintelligent. — Ola must have realized what he was posting before he or she could delete the post.

I think that was a pretty good point from Ola, actually. What you call ‘Closed minded opinion’ is actually just ‘Opinion that differs from yours’. The only things I take issue with are the ‘wait for it to float up every time’ argument or the ‘indulgent, vain, unintelligent’ argument.

awesome feature for the gadget lover but agreeing with Bobby that you’d need to have money to burn. Am thinking of other design elements i’d spend the budget on before this nifty feature.

now i would use this, i love to cook i just don’t have the space all the time in the kitchen with the traffic in and out to keep an island in their all the time, with this i could bring it up clean it off, and use it and put it away when done, would be an idea to put some kind of door that way the counter top isn’t what people are walking on

Great idea Tim Thaler! Thank you Jaime for sharing.

I am also wondering about the “hole” in which it’s stored. How deep? It would have to be in the foundation? What about 2nd floor kitchens (apartments usually have smaller kitchens)?
I’d also appreciate a general idea of the cost and the specifications for things like electricity and the “hole” and anything else needed for installation.

The noise the noise!
Jaya on 12.03.2013 at 17:06 PM
OMG! It would be such a great idea, but I would be compelled to disinfect the entire thing, every time, inside and out before I could use it – given that it’s been in the floor. Disinfect, then steam, and then probably wipe it down again. It wouldn’t save me much time, but I luuuurve the idea for other storage that doesn’t need to be hygenic!
