This month’s Designer Desktop was designed by Jessica Wright. She chose to illustrate a very interesting quote from Milton Glaser: “Computers are to design as microwaves are to cooking.”
Jessica says of her design:
I chose this quote not only because I’m a Milton Glaser fan but, because it is interesting to think about the meaning behind it and if any designers today still have this sentiment. Are computers merely an appliance to warm up and finish out concepts that are cooked beforehand? Or has the computer become apart of the creative process in such a way that without it, the vastness of design may not be where it is today? Deep thoughts!

My favorite part is that the quote credit is in the keyboard keys.

I have to disagree with the quote. It makes sense in the surface, as the microwave speeds up the cooking process among many advantages, but in the long run it is not healthy and safe for our bodies. Also most food that go in the microwave are frozen packaged food which is still not healthy. And I’m not a health guru. I use a microwave as little possible, but I still use it. But if we want to talk about progress and in a positive way everything has to be taken into consideration. I don’t see how computers have harmed the design process or it’s negative impact on the design industry or its users as opposed to the microwave. I will simply say computer is to design as kitchen tools (such as graters, grinder, garlic presses, choppers) are to cooking. As someone who cooks with fresh ingredients it is a pain (and discouraging) to get them ready without a tool (especially the garlic and the herbs).
