When we first came across Vanessa Barragão’s work, we were blown away at the intricate details of her textile installations. Inspired by the seaside town where she grew up in Albufeira, Portugal, Barragão creates these captivating artworks that emulate the environment of coral reefs, a nod to her connection to the ocean. She employs ancestral techniques – like latch hook, felt, knitting, macrame, and crochet – and chooses to use wasted/deadstock materials in an effort to fight against pollution and the impact of global warming on our oceans and planet.
