DMTV Milkshake: Nicole Gibbons of Clare on Creating a Joyful, Colorful Home

This week’s Milkshake guest is Nicole Gibbons, the New York City-based interior designer and founder and CEO of Clare. With Clare, Gibbons has created a thoroughly modern paint brand, with a tightly curated collection of colors (a few dozen rather than hundreds), online ordering, and free peel-and-stick samples for easy trials. Clare’s debut comes at a time when we’re spending more time at home than ever before: “I used to be in my office more hours than I care to admit,” Gibbons tells us. “I forgot how much joy my home brings me.” Like many of us, Gibbons spent the early days of the pandemic “organizing and cleaning and buying plants” – now, as we look to longer term evolutions in our living spaces, she encourages us to consider the transformative of paint. “Paint is one of the easiest and least expensive things you can do to transform your space,” she says. “There’s no better feeling than coming home to a space that you love.”

Here, Gibbons shares the most important lesson from her time working in corporate PR for a major fashion brand, the brand she’d most like to collaborate with (spoiler: the answer begins with a “Bey”), and the historical property she’d most like to revamp from a color perspective – an answer of most interest to anyone who’s a fan of the Broadway musical that dominated the 2016 Tony Awards…and featured a Founding Father who once made his home in Central Harlem.

Milkshake, DMTV (Design Milk TV)’s first regular series, shakes up the traditional interview format by asking designers, creatives, educators and industry professionals to select interview questions at random from their favorite bowl or vessel. During their candid discussions, you’ll not only gain a peek into their personal homeware collections, but also valuable insights into their work, life and passions.
