DOG-I-Y: Modern DIY Etched Glass Treat Jars

DoggIY: Modern DIY Glass-Etched Dog Treat Jars

After complaints from my husband that our dogs’ treats were taking over our pantry (it’s kinda true), I decided it was high time to do something about all those boxes and bags of goodies. I knew I wanted treat jars that looked good — something I could proudly display on my counter — and didn’t cost a lot. With those two rules in place, I ultimately decided to just get a bit crafty and make my own. And you know what? These DIY etched glass treat jars are awesome! And easy! And totally customizable! Wanna make your own? I’ll show you!

Before we get started, take some time to think about the design(s) you’d like to use. I found a basic paw and bone shape that I liked and was pretty sold on the idea of a little Helvetica action. Whatever you decide, keep in mind that simple shapes are easier to work with. Got your design? Sweet. On to the materials!

Materials:

1. clear vinyl contact paper

2. print out of your design(s)

3. glass jar (I used these jars from Freund — the opening is wide enough to fit your hand into, which is super nice.)

4. cutting mat

5. paint brush

6. glass etching cream

7. Xacto knife

Steps:

Step 1: Place your clear contact paper over the print out of your design, backing side down. You might need to tape it down to keep everything flat. With your Xacto knife, carefully cut around the outline of your design.

Step 2: Make sure your jar is clean and dust/grease free. Peel the contact paper off of the paper backing and position it on the jar in your desired location. Rub around the edges of your design to make sure there is a tight seal between the glass and contact paper.

Step 3: With your paintbrush, apply a thick layer of etching cream on the exposed areas of your design, brushing in all directions. Let the etching cream sit and work its magic for 5-10 minutes. Note: Don’t get this stuff on your skin! If you do, rinse it off immediately — or wear gloves.

Step 4: Rinse the etching cream off with warm tap water, working quickly so the cream doesn’t sit in the sink. Rinse the sink out immediately after as well. Peel off your contact paper then wash your jar thoroughly with soap and water. Once dry, fill with treats!!

What do you think, Dog Milkers? Easy, yes? What words or shapes would you use?

Special thanks to Freund Container & Supply for providing these glass jars for me to play with! Check out their site; they have just about any kind of container you could possibly want!
