The Munich born and raised Stephan Weishaupt grew up surrounded by good modern furnishings thanks to design-loving parents and grandparents. His formal education was done in Munich at the University of Applied Sciences where he graduated and went on to work in marketing for the BMW Group in Germany, the U.S., and Canada. In 2005, he ventured into his own business of communications consultancy where he focused on the design and fashion industries in Canada. With a desire to merge artistry and design, Weishaupt launched Avenue Road in 2007, a Toronto-based one-stop-shop showroom housing goods from a long list of high-end lines of home furnishings. Since then, they’ve expanded south by launching Avenue Road U.S.A by opening a showroom in New York City. Let’s see what the ambitious Weishaupt finds interesting with his global picks, in this week’s Friday Five.
2. 2002 BMW (Germany)
For me this is great emotional design, a car that has become a design icon.
3. Paul Smith mug (UK)
I admire his brand design consistency over almost 50 years, his humor in his design executions, his incredible energy!
4. Acrylic figurines by Abraham Palatnik (Brazil)
Fell in love with them during one of my trips to Brazil. True 70s design. They reflect their surroundings and looks differently from every angle. I especially love the owls and fish.
5. Flaunt Rug by Kelly Wearstler for The Rug Company (USA)
I met Kelly for the first time in early 2014, she has an incredible eye for design and developed her own, strong design language combining bold styles and elements to create a unique KW look. I am absolutely in love with the Flaunt rug that is now in my Florida home. Its wavy design gives a true beach house feel.
