Studio Swine gave the phrase “fishing expedition” a whole new meaning with Gyrecraft, where they traversed 1000 nautical miles collecting plastic trash. Using this trash, they created luxurious, unearthly objects for modern consumption.
To convert the plastic they found during their trip, Studio Swine also created their own Solar Extruder, which melts and extrudes the sea plastic they found with solar energy. Sea plastic is transformed into a valued commodity, reminiscent of turtle shells and corals.
The collection consists of five different objects that represent five major ocean gyres. The purpose of Gyrecraft is to bring attention to the huge problem of pollution in the world’s oceans, and reuse the waste in a artisan, innovative way. Moreover, much of the craftsmanship took place on the boat, reminiscent of heritage of local maritime crafts.
