Mingus & Dottie Try It: Wondercide All-Natural Pest Control

It’s summertime, which means a lot of us share a mutual annoyance: fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and other vermin seemingly intent on making our lives miserable. In this month’s installment of Mingus & Dottie Try It, we check out Wondercide natural, organic pest-control products. Check out our review (and a special coupon code) below!

Maybe you’re like me and have grown increasing dubious and averse to all the harmful chemicals we encounter in our daily lives that potentially threaten our (and our pets’) health. At the same time, when you’re dealing with nasties like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, those little disease-sharing buggers in and of themselves can pack a dangerous punch. Here’s what I really like about Wondercide: Their products are organic, 100% natural alternatives to toxin-ridden conventional pest repellents. Wondercide products contain no harmful chemicals or synthetic pesticides. Instead, they’re composed of things like cedarwood oil, neem oil, lemongrass, and geranium. Nice, huh? Plus, Wondercide products are biodegradable and cruelty-free. Add that to Wondercide’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness, and you’ve got a product I can feel some genuine warm fuzzies about.

[Disclosure: Wondercide sent us some products (pictured above) to try out. All views and opinions are our own.]

First, we checked out Wondercide’s Repel soap bar, an item Mingus and Dottie were super curious about until they realized it involved getting baths. Repel uses citronella and geranium to fight fleas and other pests, and it has a light, fresh scent. Having never used an actual bar of soap to bathe my pups, I was a little squirmy about the process, but using Repel was a cinch, way easier than liquid shampoo. Simply rubbing the soap over the dogs’ fur produced a thick lather that could be worked into the coat and skin, and the suds rinsed easily away, much easier than with liquid shampoo. I was impressed. Truth be told, it’s hard to say whether Repel has actually done anything to keep pests away from the dogs, since they’re on an oral flea-control medication, but I can say that, as far as baths go, I certainly prefer it to some ol’ nasty “chemical” stuff.

And surely you remember how much Dottie likes baths.

Another member of Wondercide’s pest-repellent arsenal is Evolv flea and tick control spray. Evolv is a holistic, veterinarian-recommend, spray-on repellent that both repels and kills insects, eggs, larvae, and pupae. It’s a product you’d use in place of conventional insect-repellent (all that DEET stuff) to ward off fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. It’s easy to apply; you simply spray it on your pet’s coat. Since Wondercide products are safe for both pets and people, my husband and I have sprayed it on ourselves when working in the yard. While I can’t say it repels every single mosquito, it works just as well as any high-powered synthetic stuff, which is good enough for me. Evolv can also be used on furniture and bedding to control pests indoors.

(One note: since cedarwood oil is an active ingredient in Evolv, you might find you or your pup smelling faintly reminiscent of, in the words of my husband, a gerbil cage. It’s the smell of a clean gerbil cage, though… an important distinction, I believe.)

Finally, since it seems bug bites are bound to happen no matter what you do, Wondercide’s Skin Tonic Spray is formulated to provide soothing relief to bites, hot spots, and other skin irritations, including mange, rashes, and burns. Its ingredient list includes neem oil, coconut, vitamin E, lavender, and lemongrass, and there’s no alcohol or artificial colors or fragrances. Its all-natural antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-itch properties help control skin irritations in both pets and humans.

Ming’s our itchy little guy, often worrying the tiniest itch into a full-blown hot spot or bald patch. I’ve used the Skin Tonic Spray on such spots, and it does seem to control his itching in those places. (Of course, then he just moves on to a new spot. I swear. Dogs.) Once again, I’ve tested out the Skin Tonic Spray on myself to get a better feel for its effectiveness. It produces an instant cooling effect on my mosquito bites, and within minutes of application the itching noticeably lessens. Safe over-the-counter options for reducing itching and skin irritation in dogs are few, so I’m happy to have Wondercide’s Skin Tonic Spray on hand for the remainder of the summer.
