R & Company Presents Sebastian ErraZuriz’s Breaking the Box

Just last week, New York City-based R & Company opened Breaking the Box, a solo exhibition featuring new work by artist and designer Sebastian ErraZuriz. The curated show features some of ErraZuriz’s new designs in his Mechanical Cabinet series which double as functional pieces of art. Known for thinking outside the box, ErraZuriz continues creating these cabinets and boxes that challenge people’s perceptions of how they operate based on cultural norms. The pieces appear to be simple at first but viewers are encouraged to discover the unusual ways they open and expand by interacting with them, thereby “breaking the box” of convention.

ErraZuriz’s modular cabinets, credenzas, and boxes come together through a combination of traditional woodworking techniques and advanced technology that allow the components to rotate, spin, and evolve into new forms that always surprise.

Also on display is the playful Bird Chandelier, which will hang in R & Company’s 40-foot atrium gallery space. The sculpture features a hundred taxidermy birds that appear frozen in time yet still alive, calling life and death into question.
