Steven Mullenbach is a furniture designer who recently graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He sent me over some of his recent work and I’m gaga over it (above chair, collaboration with Chris Ruhland). Be sure to keep tabs on this guy.
He says of his work:
My work attempts to reconsider materials, and process. I enjoy using new materials in a traditional way, or traditional materials in a new way. It’s often a juxtaposition of the two where each becomes something new as a result. Within each design there is a dialogue between materials. I try to make them interact through the way they connect and rely on each other to create a structure or function. I want this relationship to be equally as prominent as form, or even determine form. Ideally, the form is a direct result of the material and process with little or no unnecessary elements. My thought process generally evolves from this material relationship into an intended function.
