You might have seen this photo on our sister travel Instagram @designmilktravels (are you following us yet?). The dining space looked so magical and beautifully designed, we knew we had to find out more about the hotel it resides in. It turns out that the Radisson Collection Hotel – Strand Stockholm was recently renovated by Swedish architectural studio Wingårdhs who gave the interiors a new modern look that appeals to all design lovers.
Wingårdhs was tasked with refreshing the hotel’s 170 guest rooms, lobby, meeting rooms, new restaurant and bars. The main priority of the renovation was to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that highlighted both new features and the original details of the storied hotel, which originally opened in 1912 to coincide with the year’s Olympic Games.
A custom color called Strand Grey was created specifically for the hotel, complementing the other neutral and natural materials like stone, wood, leather and metal found throughout the interiors. The grey-toned color also provides a neutral backdrop that allows all the contemporary furnishings and fixtures to have their moment. Eagle-eyed design enthusiasts will be able to spot design classics like the 2097 chandeliers from FLOS and the Swan chairs from Fritz Hansen. Young artists and designers were commissioned by local firm Young Art to create photography, paintings and other artworks to be used throughout the lobby, event spaces, guest rooms and restaurant.
In the guest rooms, the bright white linens on the beds pop out against the warm wood and dark tones, creating a visual siren’s call for you to take a rest. The only other bright accent in the rooms are the windows which have been painted white to draw you towards the Nybroviken bay.
The hotel’s new Swedish brasserie and bar, “The Strand,” serves a menu of authentic Swedish cuisine created by head chef Richard Williamson who grows the restaurant’s own vegetables, herbs and spices on the hotel’s rooftop garden. Guests can enjoy their meals and late night drinks beneath the restaurant’s dramatic light installation that spans the length of the atrium and is filled with hundreds of lights to resemble the night’s sky. The floor-to-ceiling windows opening up to the views of the water and the variety of long sofas and plush lounge chairs will make you want to order another drink just so you can hang around a bit longer.
Travelers on business will have no qualms about working out of the office. The hotel has four meeting rooms including the Harbor Suite overlooking the waters and can be used for dinners, meetings and events.
