North Carolina has a proud heritage and reputation for its furniture and textiles for more than a century and has remained a leading hub for the high-quality, traditional craftsmanship found in these industries. More recently, a fresh generation of makers and designers are ushering in a new era to add to the region’s successful legacy by bringing with them a modern perspective. Two of those makers are CICIL and Artish Studio, who have collaborated on a furniture and rug collection that highlights the talent of the New Carolina movement.
Both CICIL and Artish are women-owned and operated, as well as North Carolina based; thus, the collaboration was a natural fit. CICIL is known for their East Coast wool area rugs made only with natural, renewable materials. Their rugs take on contemporary shapes, all in neutral colorways that can tie an entire room together. Artish Studio also takes a playful approach with their furniture and uses similar shapes and forms. As their philosophy is “form, function, AND play,” they focus on creating bespoke pieces that are interactive, modular, and unexpected.
The brands’ collaboration was a perfect fit, not just because they share similar mindsets on creating beautiful, regionally made U.S. products but have a kindred aesthetic. The furniture and rugs in the series pair naturally together, as if they were made under the same maker. While the rugs provide a grounding foundation, the furniture echos similar silhouettes and forms.
