The Astell&Kern LUNA In-Ear Monitors Go All Out for $2,970

Astell&Kern has long been known for its uncompromising approach to high-end portable audio, and its newest release pushes that reputation even further. The new Astell&Kern LUNA in-ear monitors (IEMs), priced at $2,970, are the company’s most ambitious attempt yet at building a no-compromise listening experience.

The LUNA marks the third entry in Astell&Kern’s growing IEM lineup, following the AK ZERO1 and ZERO2. With each generation, the brand has inched closer to its stated goal of reproducing music with absolute fidelity to the original recording. With LUNA, Astell&Kern claims to have reached a new level of precision, balance, and spatial awareness.

At the heart of the LUNA is Astell&Kern’s newly developed 13mm Unipolar Micro Planar Magnetic Driver, nicknamed Katabiki. Created in collaboration with Japanese audio brand MADOO, the driver combines advanced engineering with artisanal craftsmanship. Unlike traditional planar drivers, Katabiki uses a unique unipolar magnetic circuit and an ultra-thin, lightweight diaphragm imprinted with an aluminum pattern. Together with a powerful single magnet and dual ring-shaped yoke, the design reduces unwanted resonance while dramatically improving speed, resolution, and tonal accuracy.

The result, according to Astell&Kern, is deep, controlled bass paired with delicate treble extension – making the LUNA versatile enough to handle everything from intricate classical pieces to hard-hitting electronic tracks.

True to its name, LUNA takes visual cues from the soft curves and silver glow of the moon. The housing is crafted from solid titanium, not only enhancing durability but also keeping weight down for comfort during long listening sessions. Its elegant, flowing shape isn’t just for looks – it’s engineered to optimize acoustic flow while ensuring a snug and stable fit.

Each pair is handcrafted in Japan, where seasoned artisans assemble every component under strict quality controls. The result is a product that combines advanced technology with meticulous craftsmanship.

To maximize performance, Astell&Kern partnered with cable specialist Eletech for LUNA’s removable cable. The stock cable blends high-purity silver-coated OCC and copper OCC conductors, carefully designed to minimize distortion and deliver accurate, detailed sound. The 4.4mm balanced plug and aluminum-finished connectors add a premium touch, while the cable itself is engineered to resist tangling.

The LUNA ships with a full set of accessories to help listeners get the best fit and performance possible. Included in the box are: a Hi-Fi grade silver-coated OCC and copper OCC cable by Eletech (4.4mm balanced); three pairs of Baroque silicone ear tips (S/M/L); three pairs of AET07 ear tips (S/M/L); one pair of foam tips; and an Alcantara carrying case for safe storage and travel.

At $2,970, the LUNA IEMs aren’t aimed at casual listeners. Instead, they’re a showcase of what’s possible when engineering, design, and craftsmanship are pushed to the extreme. For audiophiles seeking the ultimate in precision and artistry in a portable form, LUNA may just be the pinnacle of Astell&Kern’s in-ear monitors so far.
