The Iconic Luminator Floor Lamp Gets a New Pop of Color

Since 1954, when it was first designed by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the Luminator lamp has been an iconic classic. It is functional minimalism on full display – what more could we ask for? A pop of color of course, and Flos answered. Originally released in anthracite, it’s now also available in white, red, yellow, and blue that highlight the lighting’s essential shapes. The indirect floor lamp consists of a detachable metal tripod and a tube wide enough to contain the lamp holder.

After its release in 1954, the masterful Luminator went on to win the 1955 Compasso d’Oro. “When I think about it, I realize that Luminator was specifically conceived for the Compasso d’Oro 1955: it was our answer to the request to “provide a useful shape” to the Italian industry,” Achille Castiglioni said in a Domus interview, 1995.

Functional yet elegant, Luminator joined Flos’ catalogue when the company was created in 1962. The new colors were chosen using the brand’s usual philosophical approach – red and yellow were part of the very first production in the 50s, while blue has been in the catalogue for some time. White was selected because it’s considered the best color to underline the graphic quality of the design.

Other updates have been made as well, geared towards improving the user experience and increasing sustainability. A new painting process has been added, and the new LED bulb with Lumen is brighter. Also, the lamp now includes a dimmer pedal to control the light level.
