Reusable tote bags have become a staple in every household. While they are great for the environment, they do have one (literal) pain point: most tote bags can only be carried by hand or on your shoulder. If you have a heavy load, they aren’t the most comfortable. Enter, the Notabag, founded by Adnan Alicusic. The Notabag Original was created to fulfill the need of a bag that’s small, practical and easier to carry than a tote bag but less cumbersome than a backpack. With a simple pull on the straps, it can be transformed into a tote bag or a backpack, making life on the go easier for your hands and back. This unique design, which was created using Dieter Ram’s 10 principles of good design, has earned Notabag various German and international design awards, including the German Design Award 2016, Hessischer Staatspreis Universelles Design 2016, and the Good Design Award 2019.
The Notabag Original is made of cotton and a rip-stop nylon, and is water-resistant but also machine-washable. Inside, there is an attached pocket that gives you easy access to your most essential needs like your wallet or your keys. When not in use, the bag folds into a hand-sized pouch that can be tucked away in your pocket or the glove compartment in your car so you’re never without it.
The idea of a reusable bag is rooted in sustainability values. In addition to working with a small family-run factory in Guangdong, China that values fair wages, ethical working conditions and equitable practices, Notabag also pledges to commit 1% of its sales to nonprofits that are actively working to protect the planet.
Notabag’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection is available in a range of punchy colors and modern patterns, including Peach Twist, Blue Twist, Black Brush, Red Brush, Green Sprinkle and Black Sprinkle. If you’re more of a neutral lover, Notabag’s full collection includes solids in black or grey. Need a bit more space for a weekend trip? The Notabag duffle bag also has an ingenious design that can be worn three different ways.
